UK Readies a Proper Nat’l Burger Day

Aug. 25 is National Burger Day in the UK and the mother country will put to shame the spotty U.S. burger-day celebration we hold annually on May 28. More than 800 restaurants will take part in the fourth annual “Mr Hyde National Burger Day” event, organized by a daily lifestyle/dining email service. Participating restaurants offer at least a 20% discount one or more burgers that day.

To take advantage of the deal, diners need only complete on online form, designating a chosen restaurant, and a voucher is sent by mail. Additionally, the lucky 3,000 who wrangled tickets will attend a Mr Hyde National Burger Day party London that day. More than a dozen restaurants will serve food.

In addition to discount, many of the 800+ restaurants participating across the UK are offering special burgers for the National Burger Day event. The Gourmet Burger Kitchen chain is offering “The Jamie Burger”—a 6-oz. patty, grilled in French’s mustard and topped with Red Leicester cheese, sriracha mayo, pickled onions, ketchup, and lettuce—named for and created with National Burger Day founder Jamie Klinger. Burger Bear offers a £10 meal that includes The Yolky Bear burger–a cheeseburger topped with double oak smoked bacon, Burger Bear Bacon Jam, Helluvapino Relish, Ribman hot sauce and a sunny-side-up fried egg—plus a glass of wine or a beer.

McQueen in Shoreditch in London’s East End offers a 20% discount on its special, the Hell is for Hero’s [sic]. That’s a house-made beef patty with 10 hours slow-cooked pork shoulder and beef chilli, smoked bacon, jalapeňos, Ogleshield cheese, beef tomatoes, onions and lettuce in a brioche bun. It’s served with “triple cooked beef dripping chips” and house-made ketchup.

The Terrace in London’s tony Belgravia district has five burger specials: Mexican, Hawaiian, Spanish and Nacho burgers plus a classic cheese and bacon burger. Pho & Bun, which menus an array of Steamed Bao Burgers, will introduce new Vegan Tofu and Aubergine Bao Burger varieties just for Aug. 25.

Of course some bright chef always finds a way to win with chocolate. Ninth Ward in London has a Chocolate Bacon Burger for just £10.

A shirttail to point out two menu additions last week that would work just fine here: One is the four-item Whopper Jr. Range (menu) that Hungry Jack’s (Burger King In Australia) is offering. There are Spicy, Bacon, BBQ and Classic versions, all priced at $2.95 NZ (about $2.15 U.S). Beats discounts. Maybe when Burger King has had its fill of Whopperitos and Chicken Fries Dogs and such, it might try something simple and fun with the Whopper Jr.

HungryJack's_WhopperJr.MenuThe other menu addition that caught my eye was the Apple Bourbon Baconator LTO at Wendy’s in New Zealand. It’s one of three sandwiches on the Baconator Range there. The others are the Spiceanator burger and the Chickenator, plus Baconator Fries, as here. The Apple Bourbon Baconator (below) has two fresh quarter-pound beef patties, manuka [wood] smoked bacon, apple pieces and smoked cheese with BBQ bourbon sauce. I’d order that.
