McDonald’s Expands Sriracha Mac Test

McDonald’s has expanded the test of its mashup of Big Mac and sriracha sauces to western Washington State.

Originally tried last month in San Diego as part of the continuing test of the Signature Crafted customization platform, Signature Sriracha was one of several topping combos available. Interestingly, the Washington test of Signature Sriracha (below) casts it more as a standalone sandwich with no mention of the Signature Crafted platform.

McD Signaature SrirachaThe toppings remain the same in Washington: Sriracha Mac Sauce, baby spinach and baby kale, white Cheddar cheese, crispy onions and tomato on a quarter-pound beef patty, Buttermilk Crispy or Artisan Grilled chicken patty.

McDonald’s also is testing a makeover of its apple pie. The original apple pie went onto the menu in 1968 (the same year as the Big Mac), having been pioneered by Knoxville, Tenn., franchisee Litton Cochran. A baked pie replaced the fried pie in 1992.

The new apple pie in test uses sliced rather than diced apples and has a lattice crust. It is getting a tryout on North Carolina and Southern California. The company says it has tried at least 40 different pie versions in various U.S. regions over the years.

Burger King doesn’t do all-day breakfast but its New Zealand operation is taking a small step in that direction. There, pancakes now have all-day availability. However, they’re marketed more as a dessert than breakfast, served in a stack of three topped with whipped cream and choice of chocolate, caramel or strawberry sauce.

Will Chipotle Mexican Grill’s introduction of chorizo (in Ohio, New York, California, Colorado and Washington, D.C., before a full rollout in the fall) bring renewed popularity for the sausage?

Washington-based Ram Restaurant Group is ready, having introduced a ne summer menu at its The Ram and C.B. Potts Restaurants and Breweries. The centerpiece (well, in my opinion, at least) is a new Chorizo Burger. The sausage is mixed with the beef and the patty is topped with Wisconsin Havarti cheese, a roasted Anaheim chile, mashed avocado, smoked tomato relish and chipotle aïoli on a bed of lettuce, served on a kaiser bun. An Amber Ale Chicken Sandwich and Steak Deluna entrée also are on the summer menu.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the European Union gave McDonald’s an important victory in its efforts to protect its ownership of the “Mc” and “Mac” prefixes for food and beverages. The EU’s Luxembourg-based General Court backed McDonald’s request that Singapore company Future Enterprises be prevented from registering an EU trademark for “MacCoffee.” According to Reuters, judges ruled that “The repute of McDonald’s trade marks makes it possible to prevent the registration, for foods or beverages, of trade marks combining the prefix ‘Mac’ or ‘Mc’ with the name of a foodstuff or beverage.”
