McDonald’s Expands Fresh Beef Test

McDonald’s hasn’t shared much from its Dallas test of fresh ground beef, but apparently it is going well enough to expand the test market. Newspaper Tulsa World reports that the chain is now testing fresh-beef Quarter Pounders (only) in about 75 stores in that Oklahoma city.

“These new fresh beef Quarter Pounder burgers are one of the ways that McDonald’s is continuing to test updates to our menu and focus on quality preparation,” Lance Richards, VP-Menu Strategy, told the paper said in a statement.

McDonald’s began operational tests of fresh quarter-pound patties in 14 Dallas/Forth Worth sores in May.

Speaking at the Bernstein 32nd Annual Strategic Decisions Conference 2016 on June 1, 2016, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook said, “I think we have 14 restaurants, that’s all there is and we’ve got 14,000 in the U.S. so it’s a small test, but I think it’s more symptomatic of unlocking the mindset, which is what excites me more than anything else that we are getting the entrepreneur spirit back. In terms of should it be successful, would that supply be there right now?

“No it wouldn’t. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t start to expand it, so you can then go region-by-region or you can go and develop it that way. So we are pretty good at solving the operational supply chain issues when we have a good idea, but we want to make sure we got a good idea first and we are still working on that.”

Wendy’s has offered its Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger since spring of 2015, so Burger King has decided to use the idea.

GrubGrade reports that Burger King is testing an Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger in Huntsville, Ala. Priced at $4.99, the sandwich is a tie-in with pretzel chain Auntie Anne’s.

Speaking of Wendy’s, it has officially rolled out (to participating restaurants) the Bacon Sriracha Fries, priced at $1.99, that BurgerBusiness.com wrote about last week. Can the Spicy Sriracha Chicken sandwich be far behind?

A&W Restaurants is thinking “spicy,” too. The 97-year-old chain, which doesn’t often introduce LTOs, has added a new Spicy Papa Burger.

The new burger has two beef patties totaling one-third pound with two slices of melted American cheese, tomato, onion and lettuce on a toasted bun. For the first time, the chain’s Spicy Papa Sauce, previously available only with its Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders, is on the new burger along with sliced jalapeňo. The burger and a Peppermint Treats with Oreos are available through Dec. 25, 2016.
