McDonald’s Tries New Boxed Meals for Two

Filed under breakfast, Discount, Global Burgers, Pricing, Promotion

While other chains try “bundled” meals of sandwich, fries and a drink for one person as a way to boost profits, McDonald’s in Australia has been refining a more ambitious idea for the past year: bundled meals for more than one person. Now it has expanded this boxed-meal program, creating two-person boxed lunches and breakfasts in addition to the original four-person dinner-only boxes. It also has introduced Chicken McWings as a new snack or meal add-on item.

Beginning today, customers can add two fried Chicken McWings to any value meal for $2.95 (US $3.10). They also available individually, part of a dinner box add-on, or in a snack box.

McWings also are part of a new $24.95 (US $26.19) Family Chicken Dinner Box, offered between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. This first extension of the four-person dinner boxes (introduced last year) into chicken includes:
● 10 Chicken McBites (introduced last November and now testing in Detroit as well)
● Four Chicken McWings
● Two McChicken sandwiches
● Two of the new Chicken n Cheese sandwiches
● Two small fries
● Two medium fries
● Four small drinks

The new two-person boxed meals are called Mates Meals and are offered as lunch or dinner options (sold between 10:30 a.m. and 11 p.m., from today through Aug. 16).
The Chicken Mates Meal is priced at $15.95 (US $16.74) and includes:
● Two McChicken Sandwiches
● One Shared Fries (two large fries in a single container)
● 10 Chicken McBites
● Two small drinks

The Beef Mates Meal, also $15.95, includes:
● One Grand Angus burger
● One Quarter Pounder
● 10 Chicken McBites

McDonald’s first boxed breakfast meal in Australia (offered as a four-person Family Breakfast Box in Singapore) is the Mates Brekkie Box. Priced at $9.95 (US $10.43) and available until 10:30 a.m. daily, the box includes either a Bacon & Egg, Sausage & Egg or a Sausage Muffin Value Meal (two muffins, two hash browns) and two standard-size coffees.

Additionally, the chain has added new Chicken Snacks combos, each priced at $3.95 (US $4.14). These include:
● Two Chicken Wings and one small fries
● 10 Chicken McBites and one small fries
● One Chicken n Cheese and one small fries

In the U.S., Taco Bell is borrowing the multi-person boxed-meal idea for its new $10 Taco 12 Pack promotion.

I am always impressed about the level of reporting about the market here in Australia. But I am a little concerned about the fact the burgers are referred to as McChicken ‘sandwiches’ but Aussies would refer to them as McChicken burgers.

That aside please keep up the great work.

  2. McWickedWings

This is definitely a rip off of KFC Wicked Wings.

They will be over greased and too deep fried, like all MCD’s food and even if they taste better it costs you $3 for TWO, and that’s only with a value meal.
