Not surprisingly, a few burger bars use back-to-school themes for their September Burger of the Month specials. But what should we make of two joints doing Zeus burgers? Did Greek gods have birthday months?
The Wayback Burgers chain is offering a “Back to School Meatloaf Burger” (meatloaf seasoning, jalapeňo ketchup, peppered bacon, tomato, lettuce and red onion) while Seattle’s Blue Moon Burgers remembers when with a Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Combo Basket. Its version is much better than what I recall from school cafeterias: locally sourced ground chuck steak, tomatoes, brown sugar, onions and our own mix of spices; served on a fresh brioche bun with a side of crispy golden Tater Tots.
TAG Burger Bar’s Lamb Tandoori Burger isn’t a back-to-schooler per se, but sales will benefit City Year and the nine Denver Schools the organization supports. The burger itself is a Colorado lamb patty, tandoori spices, cilantro yogurt sauce and Mediterranean salsa.
The “Gyroforce aka Zeus” burger is the September special at Grill ‘Em All in Alhambra, Calif., which has reputations for out-there names and for terrific burgers. This one’s a half-pound burger topped with beef-lamb-gyros, tzatziki, Greek garlic spread, lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickled turnip. Yes, pickled turnip. The Zeus Burger Jack’s Prime Burgers & Shakes in San Mateo, Calif., has lamb and beef together, too. It’s a seasoned Niman Ranch lamb & beef patty topped with roasted bell pepper, feta cheese and fresh mint; served on an egg bun with mixed greens and basil-pesto mayo.
But wait, there’s more. Missouri locations of 5 Star Burgers are featuring a Mount Olympus Burger this month. That’s an Angus beef patty with a cucumber-tomato-feta salad with Greek vinaigrette and kalamata olive tapenade on a butter-toasted spinach bun. Zeus will love it.
A few of the 50+ BOTM specials assembled here deserve attention. One is Flipdaddy’s “Elvis & Ed 1956” burger, commemorating Elvis’ first appearance of “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Burger Theory in Adelaide welcomes the approaching spring in Australia with its Wikileeks burger topped with “a concentrated leek and potato cream sauce (with a cheeky splash of Sauvignon Blanc from the Hills).” That’s a new one on me. And pickled cactus appears on two specials this month: Burgerhaus’ Oaxaca burger and The Oinkster’s Trip Tank.
