To quote the Facebook page of the good people at Social Burger in Vienna, Va., “…and just like that, it is September.” Indeed. And it has brought with an impressive array of burgers.
Apparently the end of summer has freed burger joints to get chummy with chorizo. It’s everywhere, including the recently renamed Burger Moovment’s Chorizo Burger (Angus beef topped with pepper-Jack cheese and a chorizo fried egg with lettuce, tomatoes, raw onion, cilantro and sour cream in a brioche bun). The Chorizo Burger at Kooper’s Tavern combines Spanish chorizo burger, Cheddar cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, a sunny-side-up egg, lettuce, tomato, onion and pepper sauce all served on an English muffin. MarienBurger in Berlin, Germany, tops a beef burger with chorizo, onion, peppers and Manchego cheese.
TAG Burger Bar in Denver has created The Three Amigos Burger for September (jalapeňo and Cheddar-Jack cheese stuffed chorizo patty, black bean purée, Baja slaw, avocado and spiced tortilla chips) with a portion of proceeds going to Teller Elementary School there. Relish Gourmet Burgers in Fredericton, Halifax, also has a chorizo burger (Chorizo sausage, tomato bruschetta, crispy Parmesan chip and balsamic syrup) with a community angle: $1 from each burger goes to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Other burger bars with September menu specials with charity overlays are Liberty Burger in Dallas, where the GiveBackBurger always raises funds for needy causes (this month the NephCure foundation), and Melt Gourmet Cheeseburgers in Leesburg, Va., which is helping Camp Specialove in Winchester, Va., for children with cancer. Applause to these and all the all the many other burger joints that help their communities.
Not everyone went with chorizo this month, of course, but there are some other, interesting meat combinations that would make Arby’s envious. BOBO Social in London combines kangaroo, ostrich and beef in a burger called Road Kill. Kuma’s Corner in Chicago tops a 10-oz. beef patty with giardiniera mustard, house-made chili and a Polish sausage. Hopdoddy Burger Bar in Texas tops a beef patty with braised bratwurst and much more. Moo Cluck Moo in Dearborn Heights, Mich., created the Ultimate Short Rib Moo for September. That’s a beef patty topped with short-rib slaw cooked with red wine and vegetables short-rib red-win jam and Cheddar.
But the champ is Burger Bar Chicago’s The Steakhouse Stacker. The build? A half-pound Angus burger with a half-pound rib-eye steak, sautéed garlic spinach, crumbled blue, crispy onions and horseradish cream sauce, all on a pretzel bun.
